Lana'i, the smallest publicly accessible inhabited island in Hawai'i, has been sold, the governor's office announced on Wednesday. The island of Lana'i, known as the "Secluded Island" has an area of approximately 141 square miles with 47 miles of coastline.  Lana'i is 13 miles wide and 18 miles long.  With only 30 miles of paved road, Lana'i scenery is virtually untouched and absolutely incredible!

Bear Lake is a scenic trailhead and destination in Rocky Mountain National Park.  Sitting at an elevation of 9,450 feet, the lake rests beneath the sheer flanks of Hallett Peak and the Continental Divide.  Several trails, from easy strolls to strenuous hikes, start from the lake.  The lake was formed during the ice age by a glacier.

Bodie State Historic Park is a genuine California gold-mining ghost town.  Visitors can walk down the deserted streets of a town that once had a population of nearly 10,000 people.  The town is named for Waterman S. Body (William Bodey), who had discovered small amounts of gold in hills north of Mono Lake.

Bodie is an original mining town from the late 1800's.  What's left today stands in a state of "arrested decay" and is maintained by the California State Parks System, who took over the town in 1962 to make it a State Historic Park.  I am fascinated by this place and it is one of my favorite historic parks.

I enjoyed exploring this lush, peaceful area and I felt like I was the only one there.  At 'Akaka Falls State Park, located along the northeastern Hamakua Coast, you can see two gorgeous waterfalls on one short hike.  The pleasant 0.4 mile uphill hike will take you through a lush rainforest filled with wild orchids, bamboo groves and draping ferns.

As you follow the paved footpath, you'll first see 100-foot Kahuna Falls.  Continue to follow the loop around the bend, and you'll discover towering 'Akaka Falls which plummets 442-feet into a stream-eroded gorge.  Beautiful 'Akaka Falls is perhaps Hawai'i Island's most famous waterfall.

In the summer of 2011, I had the absolute joy of hiking in the Big Pine Creek area for the first time. Big Pine South Fork trail climbs beneath the Palisades Glacier and jagged peaks of the Middle Palisades to reach Brainard and Finger Lakes. The bridge across the South Fork Creek was destroyed by avalanche during the spring of 2011 making this creek difficult to cross.  Expect to get your feet wet and use caution with high spring runoff. Trust me, as one of my boots got trapped between two large boulders while crossing this creek and I was up to my neck in cold rushing water. I was wearing a heavy pack with camera gear. Thank goodness for my walking stick as it helped me to navigate out of the creek safely. As you hike further, the trail beyond Willow Lake becomes indistinct with rock cairns marking the way to the upper lakes.
