I began my hike after leaving Mosquito Flat, located at the end of Rock Creek Road. At 10,300 feet, it is the highest trailhead in the Sierra. Beautiful Marsh Lake is the second in a string of eight lakes along the Little Lakes Valley trail. Peaks up to 13,700+ feet provide a scenic backdrop to the valley.

O'ahu's Leeward or Waianae Coast remains largely undiscovered by the vast majority of tourists to the island. Polynesians arrived here to fish its teeming waters. They named Waianae for the abundance – Wai for "water" (or rich) and anae for the prized mullet fish. O'ahu's Waianae Coast is known for having some of the State's most beautiful panoramas, brilliant sunsets, and excellent underwater sporting.

Development is relatively low density in the "other O'ahu", and there are still many small farms typical of an agricultural village. Waianae is historically known and infamous as a fishing village due to productive ocean waters. Predominant features are the longest white sand beaches on O'ahu, amphitheater valleys and dramatic volcanic mountains.

The Water Garden is a Class "A" trophy suburban office complex situated on 17 acres and is located in Santa Monica, California. Next door to The Water Garden is Yahoo! Although unsafe for swimming, wild and beautiful Kaiolohia (Shipwreck Beach) on Lana'i remains a favorite stop of mine. It is a great spot to view sea turtles and other treasures. There is also a magnificent view of neighboring Molokai, which rises across the Kalohi Channel. The beach's eight-mile stretch of sand offers a great spot for walking and exploring.

The Kalohi Channel is known for having powerful currents and numerous reefs, and many ships have met their watery demise here, hence the name "Shipwreck Beach." Perhaps the most famous resident at Shipwreck Beach is the World War II Liberty Ship, whose rusted hulk still clings to a reef near the shore.

While exploring the islands of Hawai'i over the years, there is an ancient place called Kaunolu Village where I feel an intense amount of positive energy. It is located on the southern tip of Lana'i and used to be a favorite fishing spot of King Kamehameha I in the 1790's. This is the place he retreated to after conquering Mau'i, Moloka'i and Lana'i.

Here you'll find a spectacular view of Shark Fin Cove and Lana'i's southern sea cliffs, the remains of Halulu Heiau (sacred temple), petroglyphs and "Kehekili's Leap," where warriors would demonstrate their bravery by diving off a 60-foot cliff.

This sacred place is so incredibly beautiful and untouched.

While exploring the island of Moloka'i, I came across these beautiful coconut palm trees, their leaves gently blowing in the trade winds. I believe these palms may be a part of the ancient Hawaiian coconut grove planted in the 1860's during the reign of King Kamehameha V. The King, nicknamed Kapuaiwa, selected this particular site because of the sacred ponds located there.

In the far distance, you can see the island of Lana'i.

THE PASSING OF A MASTER: GENE NOCON

A friend, Photographer and Master Printer Gene Nocon passed away last Sunday. I had the pleasure of knowing and working with Gene for over 15 years. He was a mentor and a creative spirit. We worked together on many projects and exhibits and he printed the very first limited edition prints from the award winning series "A New Discovery". About ninety percent of my silver gelatin fiber base prints were printed by him. I have so many fond memories of hanging out with him in his darkroom and studio. He used to tell the best stories about his time working with past photographic legends. Gene, you will be missed. My heart goes out to his family.

His name is not readily reconized, but his work has been seen by more people than any one single photographer. His career started in the early ‘70s when he traveled to Europe and found work at the STARS AND STRIPES newspaper in Germany. He worked as a photographic printer with the legendary photographer/editor Red Grandy: Gene Nocon was destined from the beginning to work with the legends of photography.

In 1975 Gene moved to England. Almost immediately his expertise in the photographic darkroom was recognized and he would eventually be working with the most famous names in the industry. Amongst them were Terence Donovan, Terry O’neill, Linda McCartney, Cecil Beaton, Norman Parkinson, and through John Kobal (KOBAL HOLLYWOOD COLLECTION) printed for George Hurrell, CS Bull, and other Hollywood greats. With Terence Pepper of the National Portrait Gallery London he printed for Paul Tanqueray and Howard Coster. The prints made for these individuals, along with hundreds more photographers, would be used for magazines, books, exhibitions, and collections.

It was in 1980 that Gene entered a photograph in an annual contest that would make him ILFORD PRINTER OF THE YEAR. He was to use this accolade to showcase and highlight the role and importance of the photographer printer with an exhibition called THE PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINT. Around this time Gene’s name was brought to the attention of HRH the Prince Andrew who had an interest in photography. As photographic advisor to Prince Andrew the relationship was to prove a marketing godsend for the photographic industry. Sponsored by ILFORD and NIKON Gene created and produced another exhibition entitled PERSONAL POINTS OF VIEW - the subject of photography becoming the photographer. A taxicab driver (Malcolm Cleaves - representing London tourism), a model (Clare Park - VOGUE Model of the Year), children, paparazzi (Koo Stark), fashion (Zandra Rhodes - fashion designer), music/entertainment (Linda McCartney), and royalty (Prince Andrew) took their own pictures to show the reality of their world. Television, magazine and newspaper crews were stepping over each other to cover the exhibition event held at Hamiltons Gallery in London.

Working with Sarah, the Duchess of York, Gene helped organized the largest photographic event ever held in Great Britain. ONE DAY FOR LIFE was a year in the making culminating on August 13th, 1987, with thousands of men, women and children taking pictures to capture a moment in their lives on that day. Edited and made into a best selling book it raised money for cancer research. ILFORD’s annual calendar was again Gene’s project: working in the background - submitting Prince Andrew’s photographs as an objective “test” of Prince Andrew’s photographic talent.

Gene organized the photography for the Royal Wedding of Prince Andrew and Sarah. It was his portrait of Prince Andrew and Sarah, that became the Royal Wedding Commemorative Stamp. And it was Gene who organized the logistics for Prince Andrew to photograph the castles representing Great Britain (Windsor, Carrickfergus, Edinburgh, and Caernarfon) that are the images on the High Value Definitive Stamps in use today by the Royal Mail.

Honored as a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society (FRPS) for his contributions to photography he help founded the RPS Distinction Panel for Photographic Printers and served as it’s first Chairman.

His popularity and zeal for photography led to having his own television series entitled NOCON ON PHOTOGRAPHY for Thames Television London.

His book PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTING, describing the “f/stop method” of printing, became the bible for the black and white printing industry. It went on to its 4th printing for VIRGIN Press. The “f/stop method” is basis for his invention and production of the NOCON Photographic Timer which was distributed and sold by CALUMET.

The memorial service will be held on Friday, December 2nd at the Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcala, San Diego, California, at 10:30am.

I'll never forget exploring this area of the island of Lana'i. I found a nice spot of stable ground, right on the very edge of a rocky cliff and set up my camera and tripod. With crashing ocean waves below, I stood in awe and admired the wonderful view of Pu'u Pehe.

Standing 80 feet tall, Pu'u Pehe - also known as "Sweetheart Rock" - is one of Lana'i's most recognizable landmarks. It is also the setting for one of Hawai'i's most enduring legends.

The story goes that a ravishing young princess from Maui, was captured by a young warrior from Lana'i. He took her as his wife and brought her back to his home island. He was so stricken with her beauty that he was afraid to let other men see her, and thus he confined the princess to a sea cave near the rock.

One day, as the warrior was away, the weather suddenly changed drastically, and the raging surf began to pound this side of the island. The warrior rushed back to the cave, but it was too late, his beloved Pu'u Pehe had drowned. Heartbroken, he retrieved her body and with the help of the gods, climbed the steep rock island where he buried her in a tomb. Overcome with grief, the warrior then leapt off the rock to his death.

Taking the dirt road to Polihale Beach is such a blast, and even more exciting if you are driving a Jeep! The Polihale Beach is located on the westernmost end of Kauai. Being an extension of the Barking Sands Beach, it is the longest beach in Hawaii with a 17 mile long stretch of beautiful white sand. The sand dunes can reach towering heights of over a hundred feet. The majestic cliffs of Na Pali begin at the Polihale Beach's northern point where the Polihale State Park is also located.

I was amazed at how the infrared film captured the rocks at Anini Beach. They remind me of giant hot coals. Anini Beach on Kauai's north shore is a 3-mile-long beach sheltered by one of the longest and widest reefs in Hawaii measuring 2 miles in length and 1,600 feet at its widest point. It is such a beautiful area. This piece is one of my earlier works, created in 2005.

In 2004, I set out to document some of the old historical structures and also to capture and preserve some of the breathtaking and untouched landscapes you'd find on the islands.

The old wooden "Wainiha Bridge" that I photographed in 2005 on the north shore has since been torn down and replaced with a steel deck truss bridge. I was very sad to see it go and in my opinion, the design of the new bridge is a real eye sore. I am very grateful that I captured the old bridge on film as it was one my favorite bridges on Kauai.

One of my favorite places to explore, Keomuku is located on the northeast shore of Lanai. During ancient times, fishermen and farmers settled along the coastal portions of this area up to the valley of Maunalei. Keomuku was a small and sleepy fishing village up until 1899, when the Maunalei Sugar Company moved in, turning the village into a bustling sugar plantation.

Today, Keomuku lies abandoned and is called a ghost town by some. Little remains of the village and there is little evidence that once a thriving sugar industry was located here. The only structures that are left standing are a few old wooden structures from Club Lana'i and the original structure of the Ka Lanakila o Ka Malamalama Church, which was completed in 1903. It is the last structure that is still intact in the village.

The ancient sport of kings and their horses came to Hawaii more than 100 years ago, and finds its Kauai home at Anini Beach Park. Hawaii is one of the few places in the world where people can watch professional polo. O'ahu has its own team, as does Kauai. Games take place on a grassy field across from Anini Beach on Sunday afternoons.

CHICAGOLAND

I am very excited to announce that I have a new body of work called Chicagoland - Black & White Cityscapes of Chicago. I recently discovered this series while working on The Archive Project. This is my first body of work featuring cityscapes. Chicagoland is not featured on my website just yet, as I am still editing the project. I have over a dozen photographic images so far, so please stay tuned.

This work was created by using an old manual SLR film camera, Ilford Delta 100 Professional Black-and-White Film and Agfa APX-100 Agfapan Professional Black-and-White Film. Sadly, the Agfa APX-100 Agfapan film is no longer being manufactured. The traditional negative is scanned on a drum scanner to create a 300 megabyte digital file which serves as a vehicle for the tonal balancing, lighting, and darkening that was formerly done in the darkroom. Once the aesthetic interpretation is realized in the computer and matched with the artist proof print created in the traditional "wet" darkroom, the image is then printed as a limited edition archival pigment ink print.

FILM. A METHOD OF EXPRESSION

Shoot what you love and love what you shoot. I love film. I love the smell of it when I pull it out of the plastic canister. I love the feel of it when I grab the leader to thread it into the take-up spool. I love watching the rewind knob turn — confirming that the film is moving correctly through the camera. I love knowing that silver halide crystals are reacting to light and capturing what I saw in the viewfinder. I love loading the film onto a stainless steel reel and sliding the reel into a stainless steel tank. I love the anticipation of the images as the film gets through the fixer bath and can be viewed in the light. I love the negative — which leads to more anticipation of the positive images on silver gelatin fiber base paper. And most of all, I love the look of the images that film provides, the grain structure, the slight imperfections (that all of life has).

Film is my chosen medium and my method of expression.

Here is another Central Park image I recently came across while working on The Archive Project. The tall buildings of Manhattan appear in the background; a towering, urban mountain range. This piece is now part of the "New York" series.

I had always dreamed of visiting New York City and walking through Central Park. In 2005, I was given that opportunity. My project, "A New Discovery" won The Golden Light Award - Honorable Mention and I attended the gala event, which was held at a gallery in Chelsea.

I remember once upon a time when Kauai had thousands of acres of sugar cane fields. I remember seeing the workers harvesting the fields. For over a century, sugar cane, or Ko in Hawaiian, was the state's leading economic activity providing Hawaii's major source of employment and tax revenues. It takes approximately three feet of cane to produce one cube of sugar. On Kauai alone there were over 70,000 acres dedicated to sugar with up to nine major plantations operating across the island at any given time from the Hanalei River to the Mana Plain.

Lanai is a world of wonder and fantasy, truly one of the most unique places on earth. The people living in Lanai City are some of the friendliest people you'll meet. There are no stop lights on Lanai, no shopping malls, no fast food restaurants, and only one gas station on the island. Lanai is truly the old hometown we all remember and dream about.

I absolutely love exploring the island of Lanai. The island has an area of approximately 141 square miles with 47 miles of coastline. Lanai is 13 miles wide and 18 miles long. With only 30 miles of paved road, Lanai scenery is virtually untouched and absolutely incredible!

I recently came across this image while working on The Archive Project. This piece is now part of The Western Landscape series.

It was a chilly morning sleeping in a tent near the waters edge. I was awakened early by the sound of a hot air balloon hovering over the reservoir.

Scenic Stampede Reservoir, located on the Little Truckee River on the east slope of the Sierra Nevada, is one of the premier reservoirs for Kokanee Salmon fishing in the West. Situated at 6,000 feet in elevation on the Jeffrey pine and sagebrush studded mountains, Stampede is a large reservoir, covering 3,400 acres with 25 miles of shoreline. It's a very popular lake for fishermen from the Reno area and throughout northern and central California. It's also a very fertile reservoir, known for abundant plankton blooms that make it such a productive habitat for the Kokanee Salmon. Ice fishing is available during the winter months.

While exploring the western part of the island of Molokai, I came upon this lone tree standing in a vast open field. Hawaii's fifth-largest island, Molokai is only 38 miles long and 10 miles across at its widest point.

Molokai is known as the "Friendly Isle". The island is quite simple, and as such is not the typical Hawaiian tourist destination. There are no traffic lights, no dry cleaners and no tall buildings. The local night life is more akin to small town America than to that of Waikiki or even Lahaina. There are no crowds and Moloka'ians guard their laid-back lifestyle with pride.

THE ARCHIVE PROJECT

For the last few weeks, I have spent countless hours going through 20 years of my past works. With a magnifier loupe and a light box ... I have viewed thousands of images on photographic contact sheets from my archive library. It has been quite the undertaking.

During the second part of this project, I will be collaborating with my dear friend and fellow fine art photographer Mia DelCasino. She and I will edit the work I have chosen during the first round. It is great to have a second pair of eyes to help edit my work, as I have found editing can be difficult sometimes.

For the third part of the archive project ... once all of the final images have been chosen, I will then scan the negatives and review them again. I am thrilled to announce that I have already uncovered some beautiful images that I am proud to show.

The Copyright Symbol

You go to a website or blog and see something there you think is just way cool. An image, an article, a bit of animation, whatever. And you think, "Wow! That is just too cool. I want to use that on my site" (or "in my comp" or "for my next project"). So, you do a little click-and-hold action (for us MAC folk), and, voilà, you download that sucker.

Congratulations, you have just violated Federal law.

Most of the content you see on the web (and absolutely all of the content on this site) is copyrighted by the original producer of that content. If it's an image, the photographer holds the copyright; if it's text, the author; and so on. And reproducing that content, in any way, without permission of the copyright holder is a violation of Federal law.

Period.

No, really...I'm not kidding here.

The content doesn't even have to be registered with the Copyright Office of the US government. See, in the US the moment an original work is created, its copyright is also created and the holder of that copyright is the creator of that work.

And the moment you download it, you have reproduced it (that download is a copy of what was on the site, remember), and you could be in some serious trouble.

The penalties for copyright violation vary, but if the creator hasn't officially registered the material, you're looking at paying damages amounting to the lost value of that content. While exploring the island of Molokai, I saw these six coconut palm trees blowing in the trade winds. I believe these palms are part of the ancient Hawaiian coconut grove planted in the 1860's during the reign of King Kamehameha V. The King, nicknamed Kapuaiwa, selected this particular site because of the seven sacred ponds located there.

In the far distance, you can see the island of Lanai.

Windward is a term used in the islands to refer to areas where the prevailing winds blow. These areas are wetter and more lush than the drier leeward shore. The windward side of Oahu is strikingly beautiful, with towering green slopes of the Koolau mountains, lush green valleys, waterfalls, rich agricultural areas, and a string of lovely beaches.

The tropical beauty of the windward side is INSANE and I absolutely fell in love with Oahu! It feels like home to me.

I created this work while exploring the Waianapanapa State Park area on the island of Maui. The flourishing rain forests and waterfalls are spectacular along the eastern coastline. I had to work quickly as it started to rain. Luckily, the jungle canopy was so dense, it sheltered my camera and I briefly from the rain drops and I was able to continue photographing this beautiful region.

The sheer beauty of Hanalei Bay is astonishing! At two miles long, Hanalei Bay is the largest bay on Kauai and considered one of the best beaches in all of Hawaii. Hanalei means "lei making" in Hawaiian. Alternatively, the name Hanalei also means "crescent bay" and may be indicative of the shape of the bay.

Hanalei Bay Beach with its golden sand is located at the base of cliffs. These cliffs reflect into the glass-like water of the bay. Surrounding the bay are 1,000 to 4,000 foot high emerald mountains covered with mist. Behind it, waterfalls provide a breathtaking backdrop.

The Wailuku River Bridge is a historic rainbow arch bridge. Completed in 1938, the bridge stretches across the beautiful 28 mile long Wailuku River on the Island of Hawaii. Wailuku River State Park is located along the lower reach of the river. One section of the park includes Rainbow Falls, and another section Pe'epe'e Falls. There is also an area called the Boiling Pots (a series of small falls and pools). In the Hawaiian language, wai means fresh water and luku means destruction, so it means essentially River of Destruction. I absolutely loved exploring this area.

A couple of weeks ago, I received a very sweet note from Anne Inman. She wrote that the Wailuku River area was her playground as a child growing up on the Big Island of Hawaii. She thanked me for capturing the beautiful memories for her. I would like to dedicate this fine art photograph of the week blog post to you Anne. Thank you for your support and cheers to Hilo!

Ha'ena is a small community on the north shore of Kauai, approximately 7 miles from Hanalei. Backed by green mountains and cascading waterfalls, Ha'ena is at the beginning of the 11-mile Kalalau Trail along the remote and scenic Na Pali Coast.

I was inspired to create this image when I saw the roots of the old trees exposed in the sand. There is a haunting beauty in this piece and I am drawn to the luminous light coming from behind the trees. I was told by the locals that the trees were under threat of being chopped down because of a parking lot being built in this area, so I wanted to be sure to capture this magical place before it is gone.

This road leads to Ka'a'awa Valley which is situated in one of Oahu's most historic areas. The Ka'a'awa Valley is also one of Oahu's most beautiful valleys - still largely untouched by modern development. In 1850, Dr. Gerrit P. Judd purchased the land today known as the Kualoa Ranch and Ka'a'awa Valley from King Kamehameha III and the property has remained in the family ever since. The owners strive to be role model stewards of the 'aina (land), by preserving and protecting it from development.

The Ka'a'awa Valley has been used for location filming for numerous major motion pictures (Jurassic Park, 50 First Dates, Pearl Harbor) and television productions (Fantasy Island, Lost and Hawaii Five-0).

This photograph was taken in beautiful Hanalei Valley on Kauai. It is one of the very first works I created for the project and it continues to be one of my own favorites. The valley is one mile wide and six miles long. The Hanalei River flows through it. Most of the taro grown in Hawaii is grown here. It is also home to the 917 acre Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge. Established in 1972, it serves to protect endangered plants and Hawaiian water birds.

It was not until around 1920 that the first experiments in planting pineapple on Lanai were undertaken. At the time, the island was in part owned by the Charles Gay Family. In the uplands of Lanai, behind Lanai City, the first pineapple crops were planted. When the fruit were harvested, they were taken in trucks down to Manele Landing via a stone and dirt trail that was almost impassable. The crop was then loaded on small boats and transferred to Maui for canning. It was a difficult trip, which caused the loss of much of the fruit due to bruising. But, as a result of the Gay Family's success, James Dole's Hawaiian Pineapple Company knew that the crop could be grown, and in 1922, Dole purchased almost the entire island of Lanai.

Since then, the Pineapple isle has suffered due to cheaper pineapples being grown and distributed from Central and South America. The high cost of shipping the fruit, as well as cost of labor in Hawaii, contributed to the closing of the pineapple company. Now Lanai is primarily known for the 2 Four Season's Resorts and potentially for a large wind farm project.

Driving through the old pineapple fields and exploring Lanai in a rusty beat up 4-wheel drive pickup truck was an adventure ... one I will never forget.

This wonderful 90-year old North Kahana Stream Bridge on Kamehameha Highway is currently being replaced with a new modern structure designed to carry heavier loads and to help reduce flooding in the area. The $13.3 million project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2011. I am so grateful that I captured and preserved this old bridge in my body of work this past June of 2009. I find it to be heartbreaking that so many of Hawaii's old bridges are being torn down and replaced with modern structural steel designs that do not reflect the ambient landscape or Hawaii for that matter. The old Hawaiian bridges have so much charm and history about them.

I have had the pleasure of walking across many of these old bridges on Hawaii. There is this special feeling that you get when you experience them first hand.

The Polihale Beach is located on the westernmost end of Kauai. Being an extension of the Barking Sands Beach, it is the longest beach in Hawaii with a 17 mile long stretch of beautiful white sand. The sand dunes can reach towering heights of over a hundred feet. The ocean currents can be very fierce here since most of the beach is unprotected from the strong winds and powerful waves.

The majestic cliffs of Na Pali begin at the Polihale Beach's northern point where the Polihale State Park is also located. The most distinctive archeological feature is the heiau, or Hawaiian temple, located on the northern part of the beach.

Being located miles away from towns and electric lights, Polihale is a great place to see the stars like you've never seen them before. It is a true thrill to view the billions of stars that emerge soon after sunset.

Along Maui's rugged eastern coastline is the peaceful town of Hana, considered one of the last unspoiled Hawaiian frontiers. The legendary road to Hana is only 52 miles from Kahului, however the drive can take anywhere from two to four hours to complete since it is filled with narrow one-lane bridges, hairpin turns and incredible island views.

I absolutely loved staying in Hana. The flourishing rain forests and waterfalls are spectacular. It reminded me of when I lived on Kauai's north shore years ago. It has that slow-paced, true Hawaiian ambiance and it is a great place to "talk story" with the locals. The natural beauty of the Hana experience will take you back in time and give you an idea of what the rest of Maui was like 30 years ago.

"A New Discovery"

Black and White Infrared Landscapes of the Hawaiian Islands

Kelly Fitzgerald has captured the mystique and essence of the Hawaiian Islands, as only a local could. Kelly spent several years in the 1980’s living on the island of Kauai, and in that time she got to know the heart and soul of an absolutely stunning and quiet place. Twenty years later, she took on the challenge of documenting the paradise to which she was so fondly connected. Fitzgerald’s reverence for the Hawaiian Islands is evident in her new body of work entitled “A New Discovery”, which the viewer experiences as a guided tour of a paradise and its natural wonders.

She began the project largely out of the desire to preserve a beauty still largely unhampered by commercial development. “There is a timeless quality to Hawaii that is based on its close connection to the natural world,” says Fitzgerald. “I respond to this and revel in it. I also recognize that progress is encroaching and it will not last. I am moved both by a love of this place and by a desire to preserve its memory.”

Fitzgerald wanted to reach beyond what the color photograph conveys, so she chose to document her works in black and white Kodak HIE Professional High-Speed Infrared Film to reveal the ethereal and magical quality each island holds.

She is aware that there is an irony in that her disappearing subjects were captured on a film that is no longer manufactured. Fitzgerald says, “Unfortunately, Kodak discontinued this film in December of 2007. I did not know at the time, but not only was I documenting the vanishing landscape of Hawaii, I was also using a film medium that was soon to disappear.”

This work was created by using an old manual SLR film camera and Kodak Professional High-Speed HIE Black-and-White Infrared Negative Film. Sadly, the film is no longer being manufactured. The silver gelatin fiber base print is printed in the traditional darkroom by a master printer with an enlarger, conventional chemistry and trays. Made by hand, the old fashioned way. This piece is part of an award-winning series called "A New Discovery".

MY TEAM: THE FRAME STATION

Over the weekend, I stopped in to The Frame Station to get one of my recently sold fine art prints professionally framed. I have been working with them for probably over 15 years. Owner Tom Sandler established The Frame Station in 1981. Along with Manager Gloria Applegate and Head Framer Robin Herbert, they collectively have over 60 years experience in the custom framing business.

A member of the Professional Picture Framer's Association, they also offer one of the most extensive selections of mouldings in town along with both conservation and museum framing.
